Clean the Gutters
The first thing to do is to clean out the gutters. When the gutters are
too clogged, the rainwater won’t drain and will be left to pool on your
roof, damaging the shingles. If you didn’t do this during the winter
months, it’s not too late to get it done now.
Repair the Roof
Once you’ve emptied out the gutters, you will need to pay some attention
to the state of your roof. If any shingles have been damaged, then you
should fix them. Depending on how severe the damage is, however, you might
have to replace them. Take a look around your roof and see if anything
else is damaged and needs maintenance, but when you do, don’t go alone.
Have a friend or neighbor hold the ladder steady for you. Shingles can
also go missing when they are loose enough because they will be blown away
by strong winds. You’ll need to fill them in before leaks in your roof
begin to spread water damage throughout your attic and the rest of your
home.
Look for Leaks
Speaking of which, continue walking through your home looking for leaks.
Besides the roof, you’ll probably find leaks in kitchens, bathrooms, and
basements. By doing this, you can prevent the growth of mold and mildew
and stop flooding from ruining your
carpets. If the paint on the walls has started to peel or you see unusual
watermarks that were never there before, then these are two signs of a
leak forming or widening.
Seal Doors and Windows
Make sure that weatherstripping and other sealants are protecting your
doors and
windows. This measure can prevent water from being blown into your house by the
wind. Closing the gaps will help.
Check the Basement
Finally, it’s time to go into the basement again. Although you can give it
another look, it’s essential that you hire water damage and restoration
experts such as the professionals at Hydro Clean to inspect your home’s
basement before the next storm arrives.
